On Thursday March 20th, 2025, The Walt Disney Company held its highly anticipated 2025 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, where CEO Bob Iger took center stage to discuss the company’s success and its vision for the future. One of the major themes of Iger’s speech was the “perfect marriage” of creativity and technology, which he credited as the driving force behind Disney’s continued dominance in entertainment.

Iger made it clear that this seamless blend of imagination and cutting-edge technology is not a new concept for Disney. Reflecting on the company’s history, he remarked, “Since the company’s earliest years under Walt, technology has always been viewed as a powerful storytelling tool, and innovation has been in our DNA since the start.” This belief continues to fuel Disney’s creative ambitions, helping them stay relevant in an ever-evolving industry.

To illustrate this, Iger introduced an exciting new development—a fleet of BDX droids that have been making their presence felt in Disneyland. These technologically advanced droids aren’t just limited to the theme park experience; they’ll also appear in next year’s much-anticipated Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu. “Imaginative technology like this allows us to expand our creative abilities and tell our stories in compelling new ways,” said Iger, highlighting the multifaceted role that innovation plays across Disney's creative platforms—from theme parks to blockbuster films and series.

Disney Studios: A Year of Major Wins

Turning his attention to the film side, Iger proudly spoke about Disney’s exceptional 2024 at the global box office. “Our theatrical business had an outstanding year, fueled by the restoration of creativity at the heart of our studios,” he noted. Disney's success in 2024 was propelled by massive hits like Pixar's Inside Out 2, Marvel's Deadpool & Wolverine, and Moana 2 from Walt Disney Animation Studios. These films not only performed well financially but also captured the imagination of audiences worldwide.

Disney also enjoyed critical acclaim with numerous awards. Iger pointed out that Disney won a record-breaking 60 Emmy Awards, with standout shows like Shōgun and The Bear leading the charge. The company also received 15 Oscar nominations, with notable recognition for Kieran Culkin’s Best Supporting Actor win in A Real Pain, a Searchlight Pictures film.

Looking to the future, Iger teased that Pixar is working on a sequel to Coco, the 2017 Academy Award-winning film. While the film is still in its early stages, Iger promised it would be filled with “humor, heart, and adventure”—three qualities that fans have come to expect from Pixar.

Disney+: A One-Stop Streaming Hub

One of the biggest changes at Disney has been its approach to streaming. Iger emphasized Disney+ as the central hub for all of the company’s content. With its vast library of classic Disney films and recent hits, Disney+ is now positioning itself as the ultimate streaming destination. Iger explained that the streaming service’s recent integration of Hulu and ESPN tiles makes it easier for subscribers to access a wide range of content in one place. This move aims to provide a more streamlined, user-friendly experience, driving higher engagement among its subscribers.

In the near future, Disney plans to expand its streaming offering even further. When ESPN's new direct-to-consumer service launches in the fall, subscribers will be able to access ESPN’s full suite of networks, as well as ESPN+, through Disney+. This all-in-one approach will undoubtedly appeal to consumers who are increasingly looking for simplicity in their streaming services. The public may respond positively to the convenience and variety this change promises, although some may feel overwhelmed by the growing number of subscriptions required to access all the content.

Disney Experiences: Expanding the Magic

Iger also highlighted the company’s vast expansion efforts in its Experiences segment. Disney is investing more than ever before in its theme parks and resorts, with major new developments underway across the globe. “We have more projects underway around the world than at any time in our history,” Iger said proudly. Some of the most exciting upcoming additions include a Cars-themed area at Magic Kingdom, a Monsters, Inc.-themed land at Hollywood Studios, and a new Indiana Jones and Encanto-themed land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Moreover, Disney is expanding its footprint in the cruise industry with Disney Cruise Line, which will allow the company to reach even more families with its signature brand of immersive experiences. The economic impact of these investments is significant, with thousands of new jobs expected to be created, particularly in Florida and California.

However, not all members of the public may feel equally thrilled by these massive expansions. While many fans will eagerly anticipate the new attractions, some may view Disney’s relentless growth with skepticism, questioning whether it’s spreading itself too thin or prioritizing commercial success over maintaining the magic that made the parks special in the first place.

A Commitment to Making a Difference

Iger wrapped up his presentation by reaffirming Disney’s commitment to making a positive impact on the world. In response to the devastating wildfires in Southern California, the company pledged $15 million to support recovery efforts. Iger also highlighted Disney’s long-standing initiatives with veterans, Make-A-Wish, and children's hospitals, noting that Disney remains the leading wish-granter in the world for children facing critical illness.

The company’s philanthropic efforts are an integral part of its brand identity, reflecting the values of Walt Disney himself. Public sentiment is generally positive when it comes to Disney's charitable endeavors, as many consumers appreciate companies that give back to communities in need.

The Future of Storytelling

In closing, Iger reflected on the current landscape of storytelling. He emphasized that modern technology has made this “the best time to be a storyteller,” thanks to the ability to enhance storytelling quality and reach audiences in ways that were once unimaginable. With the combination of creative momentum, advanced technology, and strategic investments, Disney is poised to continue its legacy of innovation.

As Iger expressed, “The possibilities before us are limitless,” and the company’s future certainly appears bright. However, with this growth comes a certain level of responsibility to maintain the magic and creativity that made Disney a household name in the first place. While there is great excitement for the future, only time will tell how well Disney balances technological advancement with the preservation of its beloved, timeless charm.

While Disney's trajectory under Bob Iger’s leadership seems promising, the public’s opinion may evolve depending on how the company navigates the challenges of expansion, content saturation, and maintaining its core values amidst an increasingly competitive and tech-driven entertainment landscape. As always, Disney's ability to combine nostalgia with innovation will be key to sustaining its reign as a global entertainment giant.
